FAQ

QUALITY

What is the fine art print quality like?

Our limited edition prints are fine art (giclée) prints produced by Cie-Elle Digital in Australia as individual customer orders to very high colour management standards. Cie-Elle uses up to twelve pigment-based archival inks on premium, long lasting acid-free paper or canvas, giving very careful attention to each and every print edition. We think the quality is superb.

The quality process begins with an exceptionally high resolution digital scan of each original painting which we check before printing.

  • Fine Art Paper Prints
These are on 100% cotton Canson Photographique Rag, 310gsm, which is a museum grade white fine art paper. Each paper print includes a white border around the art image with an embossed signature and limited edition number in the bottom border. If you’re framing the print yourself, you can choose whether to show the wide border or not. For transportation direct to customers, paper prints are protected by acid-free tissue paper and rolled in a tube or box.

  • Fine Art Canvas Prints
These are on Breathing Color Lyve Canvas, 450gsm, which is an OBA free (that means no optical brightening agent is used), poly-cotton canvas with certified 100+ years display life.
Canvas prints are sealed by a special varnish to protect the pigment-based inks. As with paper prints, canvases are rolled in a tube or box for transportation.

When canvas prints are stretched, care should be taken to ensure they are not over-stretched. Ideally the stretched canvas should be put in a float frame with an acid-free foam backing board and sealed for longer lasting protection.

What is the quality of the framing like?

The original painting frames and range we offer for the limited edition prints have been developed in collaboration with The Art Scene, a long-established quality framing and art shop in Sydney. Each framed print order is custom-made by The Art Scene in-house, using timber mouldings.

  • Framed Fine Art Paper Prints
Framed paper prints have an off-white acid-free matt board, with the window allowing a white border around the print image area, standard glass, acid-free foam core backing board and a hanging wire. There is an option to upgrade to UltraVue UV70 glass, which offers crystal clear colour transmission and an anti-reflective surface for truly amazing clarity. The oak frame moulding for paper prints is a Larson-Juhl oak veneer timber mould. The black and white frames are quality, matt finished timber moulds.

  • Framed Fine Art Canvas prints
Canvas prints are stretched and framed in an oak float frame and finished with an acid-free foam core backing board and hanging wire. So that a white border doesn’t show on the face of the artwork, the print image is wrapped slightly over the edges when stretched and fixed onto the stretcher bar. For aesthetics, there is a small gap between the edge of stretcher bar and the frame. The oak frame moulding for canvas prints is ‘Australian Oak’, made from readily available, sustainably managed Australian native species.

Note: as timber is a natural product, there will be variations in the mouldings.

LIMITED EDITION NUMBERS

How do I know my limited edition number?

For each limited edition print, we send an artwork label signed by the artist with the edition number and some details about the artwork (this is sent separate to the print or framed print). You can affix this label to the acid-free foam backing of framed prints, but please don’t affix the label directly onto the print.

Paper print edition number and embossed signature

For paper prints, Cie-Elle embosses the artist’s signature and handwrites the limited edition number in the white border at the bottom, so you can see it when it’s framed with some white border in the window.

Canvas prints don’t have a number written or embossing on them because of the nature of the print (and the fact that the print is usually stretched over a stretcher bar.

HANDLING & CARE

How do I handle and care for my print?

To handle paper prints, hands should be clean and only touch the edges of the white border around the artwork. You could also wear white cotton gloves as an extra precaution.

Paper prints are best kept framed behind glass, sealed at the back with acid-free foam board – and hung away from direct sunlight to maximise the life of the inks

To maximise the life of the archival inks, the canvas should be hung away from direct sunlight and as the canvas is made from polycotton, avoid areas where there is high humidity or extreme temperature fluctuation.

Using a cloth slightly dampened with cold water, the canvas can be cleaned by gently wiping down the surface. Don’t put water or any cleaning agent directly on the canvas surface. And please don’t lay any objects against the canvas as it will leave an impression.
